Aha! Was what I thought when I looked at the symbol in the morning. It looks classy, glamorous and carries all the oomph and pomp of an important currency. Lets hope the other currencies flirt with the new stylish 'Ra' and jack it up.
The government in its statement says ''The symbol for the rupee would lend a distinctive character and identity to the currency and further highlight the strength and robustness of the Indian economy as also a favoured destination for global investments,''. I thought a strong economy will do the highlighting part. No?
Since the keyboards will have to be overloaded with a new character, manufacturers will stash it under some CTRL+SHIFT+Fn+.... BJP will raise a cry on how Western imperialism is demeaning the desi symbol and how the congress government is being a mere spectator doing nothing. The left parties will condemn unnecessary propaganda and question why India needs a symbol when China and Russia do not have one. Narendra Modi and Karunanidhi will release the Gujrati version and the tamil version respectively while KCR will design his own telangana version. There will be bandhs, self immolations, factory shutdowns, strikes and all that the unemployed politicians can think of.
